Giving You More Control Over Your Notifications

We know it’s important to stay connected with your favorite communities, and notifications are an essential way you stay informed. Today we’re launching two updates to Notification Settings to ensure you never miss out on the things that matter most to you. You’ll have more control and customization over what notifications you receive should you choose to update your settings, but we have not made any changes to your existing settings, the notifications you receive, or how you receive them.

First, we have updated the layout of the Notification Settings so notifications are grouped by topic such as Channels You Follow, Marketing, and Social. This allows you to opt in and out of all notifications in a category, or toggle on specific notifications within each category. Plus, you can choose to receive each notification by email, mobile app, or onsite on the web.

Second, we’ve expanded the options to allow you to tailor your notification experience for each of the channels you follow:

  1. Always: This is a new setting. Selecting this setting guarantees you will receive all notifications for a channel, including every Go Live message, VOD update, and clip notification for example.
  2. Go Live Only: This is a new setting. When you select this setting, you will only receive notifications when a streamer has started a live broadcast. You will not receive other channel-specific notifications such those about newly published VODs, Clips, or Stories.
  3. Personalized: We have renamed the former “On” setting to “Personalized.” This setting works exactly as it did before and personalizes the notifications you receive based upon the channels you watch and how you respond to notifications. For example, if you have not watched a channel for a number of months, we stop sending you Go Live notifications for that channel.
  4. Off: This setting works the same way that “Off” did in the old settings. This disables all notifications for the channel.

Impact to Existing Settings

  • If you had notifications turned “On”: The “On” setting has been renamed to “Personalized.” The Personalized setting mirrors what you have previously experienced with your notifications turned “On.” If you wish to receive all notifications for a channel to never miss an update, you can switch to Always. You can update your settings at any time on the Notifications tab of your account settings, or directly from any channel page by clicking the notification bell.
  • If you had notifications turned “Off”: Your settings will be respected and remain Off.

New name, same feature

You’ll see a longtime setting called “Smart Notifications” renamed to “Smart Delivery.” This is a name change only. It works the same as it did before: by opting in, this feature determines where you receive each notification. Let’s say you’ve opted into onsite on web, push notification on your phone, and email. Our system will check if and where you’re online and send a single notification to where you currently are, rather than all three.

Fostering Engagement Through Notifications

We heard feedback from creators and viewers that you wanted more control and an explicit “Always” on option. Adding this option ensures that your most loyal viewers will never miss a moment and will receive every notification, which was not explicitly possible before. Please note that your mobile operating system (iOS, Android, etc.) may begin filtering notifications if you do not interact with them.

The addition of these new settings also gives viewers an opportunity to opt into the specific types of messages they want, rather than force them to choose from all or nothing. Our goal with these changes is to provide you with the tools to tailor your experience and deepen engagement between streamers and viewers.

We believe these updates will help increase transparency and ensure you get the notifications that matter most to you.
